Matteo Farinella is one of the creators of Neurocomic, an exciting new initiative that brings neuroscience to life in a fictional comic story. Here he gives an insight into how, and why, this unique project came about.

I have spent the past 5 years using computer simulations to study how particular brain cells process information by day, and drawing comics by night.

This is a very special occasion: my first post in Italian! (English translation below)

La settimana prossima esce il mio primo libro: 6 Gradi Di Separazione, pubblicato dalla giovane ma intraprendente Bel-Ami Edizioni, che l’anno scorso si e’ buttata nel mondo del fumetto con Storie Brevi e Senza Pieta’, scritte da Marco Taddei e disegnate da Simone Angelini (stimato collega, benefattore e recentemente anche personal graphic designer). Chi mi conosce sara’ probabilmente sorpreso quanto me che questo strano progetto, a cui lavoro incostantemente da anni, veda finalmente la luce. Il 23 e il 24 Marzo mi troverete incredulo al BUK di Modena, per presentare il libro e scarabocchiare a vostro piacimento.

For the international friends, this is a very lousy translation of my own post: I just want to let you know that next week my fist book 6 Gradi Di Separazione is getting published in Italy by Bel-Ami Edizioni, who recently joined the comic world with the amazing Storie Brevi e Senza Pieta’, illustrated by my friend (and benefactor) Simone Angelini. You can also follow the Facebook page or come and meet me at the Modena BUK fair, where I will be signing copies the 23rd and 24th of March. This has been a long on-going project of mines and I still can’t believe it’s finally published! I guess for a while I’m not allowed to complain about the lack of opportunities in my home country…

Neurocomic On The Guardian

The full length documentary from Richard Wyllie about the making of Neurocomic, featured on the Guardian Newton Channel last weekend. Since then things have been pretty hectic down here… I promise I will try to post more drawings and less self-celebratory pictures of myself in the future. In the meanwhile I want to thank everyone for the support, you people are amazing!

Brain redrawn

This post is somehow related to Neurocomic (by the way, did you see the new hand-drawn website?) but also much more than that…

So, the news is that I will be performing some live events in the next few months. The neurocomic team will be armed with microscopes, real brain slices and sketchbooks, and everyone is invited to draw some neurons with me and learn some science along the way. It is kind of an experiment, I hope it will be fun! Oh, if you need more reasons to join us, I also made a giant comic-poster about Cajal for the occasion.

We will try this first with the friends of SUPERLAB on the 20th of February (from 7.30pm) at the Bedroom Bar.

Then we are going to take it to the Barbican Wonder Street Fair for 4 consecutive days: 7-9 April.

Entry is FREE of course. Hope to see you there!

Technicolor Snow

This weekend many people will be complaining about the snow: about how it is wet, it is cold, it slows down the traffic, etc… A while ago a friend had an original complaint about the colour of the snow, so I made a comic about it.

PS: please note how this one has nothing to do with science. This is good old-fashioned comic journal, it has been a while…

In a few days I’m flying to Italy. I’m going to take a short break from comics and focus on my thesis, but before I go I made this little card to thank all of you who supported me so far. This has been an incredibly good year (for me in general and for Neurocomic in particular) but it looks like next year is going to be even better! Have a good time and see you all soon.

This work has been sitting in my drawer for a while. I’m particularly fond of the subject so I was really looking forward to share it with you. After a long wait the new magazine MISHAMURÉ is finally printed! From the beautiful cover by Saxarts it looks very promising, if you’re around Italy you should go and take a look inside.
